Everything Duke basketball fans need to know about the Illinois Fighting Illini

The Duke men’s basketball team has looked like a juggernaut since the conference schedule began in the middle of December, but when the Blue Devils travel to Madison Square Garden on Saturday evening, they’ll prepare for an opponent outside of the ACC for the first time in two months.

The Illinois Fighting Illini, a member of last year’s Elite Eight, looked like the most impactful opponent left on Duke’s calendar a month ago. Since their 12-3 start, however, head coach Brad Underwood’s team has lost seven out of 12 games to drop from top-four seed contention. Illinois has battled illness, missing multiple players in Tuesday’s loss to the Wisconsin Badgers, and freshman forward Morez Johnson Jr. won’t play due to a broken wrist he suffered last weekend.

The Blue Devils have their own injury to deal with after veteran forward Maliq Brown dislocated his shoulder during Monday’s win over the Virginia Cavaliers, but Duke should still be seen as heavy favorites against a reeling Illinois squad.

Here’s everything Duke basketball fans need to know about the Fighting Illini ahead of Saturday’s showdown.

How has the 2024-25 season gone for Illinois thus far?

    Record: 17-10 (9-8)

    Points per Game: 83.9

    Points Allowed per Game: 72.4

KenPom National Efficiency Rank: 21st (out of 364 teams)

    Offensive Efficiency Ranking: 16th

    Defensive Efficiency Ranking: 31st

What do the Fighting Illini do best?

Illinois’s offensive production puts most teams to shame, even with its recent slide down the national rankings. The Illini have averaged almost 84 points a night and broken the 90-point barrier nine separate times, and KenPom tracks them with a 57.0% 2-point percentage on offense. With an average height of nearly 6-foot-7, they’re a top-20 offensive and defensive rebounding team, making them one of the few programs that can match Duke’s verticality.

    What does Illinois struggle with?

Despite the wonderful offensive numbers, the Illini are actually a poor 3-point shooting team. Illinois is connecting on just 31.2% of its triples, and one player on the roster is above 35% for the season. The Illini are also in the bottom 10 at forcing turnovers on defense, buying themselves an additional possession just 12.9% of the time.

    Statistical Leaders

    Points: Kasparas Jakucionis, 15.6

    Rebounds: Tomislav Ivisic, 8.2

    Assists: Kasparas Jakucionis, 4.8

    Steals: Kylan Boswell, 1.2

    Blocks: Tomislav Ivisic, 1.1

    FG%: Tomislav Ivisic, 50.4%

    3PT%: Jake Davis, 35.7%

    Player to Watch

A 6-foot-6 freshman from Lithuania, Kasparas Jakucionis has established himself as a presumed lottery pick from the start of this season. Few players can match the offensive production of 15.6 points and 4.8 assists, and he’s shooting 46.9% from the floor. With the Illini battling illness in the locker room, he’s only produced 11.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 0.5 dimes in 31.0 minutes over the last two games, so his opening few minutes will set the tone for Illinois.
