The Premier League has been chastised for how it handled the Everton case over financial rule violations, as Nottingham Forest awaits their destiny.
Everton’s 10-point suspension for violating the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability standards was lowered to six points on Monday following an appeal by the club. Forest, meanwhile, are scheduled to appear before an independent panel next week after being reprimanded by the Premier League in January for violating its financial regulations.
The Reds could potentially face consequences, including a points loss, while Everton could lose more points for a second charge of breaking the financial regulations. Andy Burnham, the mayor of Greater Manchester and an Everton fan with season tickets, has criticized the Premier League after the Toffees’ points loss was cut and called for an independent regulator to regulate English football.
“The Premier League has proved, in my view, that they can’t properly regulate football through the way it’s treated Everton Football Club,” Mr. Burnham said in an interview with Sky News. “We need a strong, independent statutory regulator for football, learning from all of the wrong things that have been done over recent weeks.”
He went on to say, “There’s been some awareness today (Monday) that the 10-point deduction wasn’t fair. We accept that, but they are attempting to place a second accusation against Everton. And wouldn’t it be double jeopardy to try to bring another case against us for the same thing?
“The club isn’t being treated fairly.”
