Leeds United wasted the opportunity to climb to the top of the Championship on Tuesday night, after a goalless draw with Sunderland at Elland Road.
Andy Hinchcliffe, a Sky Sports analyst, was furious after Leeds United were refused a penalty at Elland Road following a straightforward handball by Sunderland’s Luke O’Nien.
The Whites had battled to break down a strong Sunderland team but thought they should have had the chance to win the match 15 minutes from time. A corner from the left caused problems for the Black Cats’ defence, with O’Nien appearing to handle the ball as Joe Rodon sought to head it goalward.
A loud shout rippled around the stadium, but the officials waved it away. On commentary, Hinchcliffe couldn’t believe Leeds didn’t get a penalty kick.
Following the event, he stated, “That is clearly handball.” Luke O’Nien raises his right arm and punches the ball O’Nien.
“That’s ridiculous.” If the referee does not see it, he cannot give it. Is the referee blocked off? Possibly.
“What is O’Nien thinking?” The referee’s assistant has a decent…you can plainly see the arm coming up and hitting the ball.”
Leeds drew the match, which proved to be a squandered opportunity for Daniel Farke’s team. Leaders Leicester City lost 1-0 at Millwall in London, reducing the Yorkshire club’s deficit to one point.
However, if Ipswich Town beat Watford at Portman Road tonight, they will drop out of the top two. Indeed, the Tractor Boys will take the lead with three points in Suffolk.
Leeds return to action on Saturday, hosting Blackburn Rovers in the early kickoff.
