Keith Hackett believes Rangers were correct to be handed a dramatic late penalty kick in their stunning 1-0 defeat to Queens Park in the Scottish Cup fifth round.
Philippe Clement’s team were stunned at home at Ibrox on Sunday, as the Championship side advanced thanks to Seb Drozd’s second-half winner.
The Gers dominated Queens Park in the final minutes and had a golden opportunity to push the tie to extra time when referee Calum Scott ruled Cyriel Dessers had barged him.
More drama was to follow as the typically reliable skipper, James Tavernier, saw his spot-kick stunningly saved by excellent visiting goalkeeper Calum Ferrie.
The penalty award prompted debate, but ex-FIFA referee and former PGMOL chief Hackett argues that, while it appears severe, he understands why Scott handed it to Rangers.
Rangers have the right to be granted a penalty against Queens Park
He stated exclusively to Ibrox News: “The referee is in a good position to see and judge a push.” He doesn’t hesitate to indicate to the penalty spot.
“Based on the footage, it appears harsh, given how often such events go unpunished in the English Premier League.
“The referee can determine the amount of force used by the defender whose challenge is careless.
“He will also see a bent arm straightening throughout the pressing process. “Correct decision.”
Is Philippe Clement’s time with the Rangers up?
The penalty judgment will be discussed, but what may be less debated is Rangers manager Philippe Clement’s future following this humiliating setback.
Even if Tavernier had been able to square the score following the disputed decision, you got the impression that his poor performance would have been enough to beat him.
The fact that they lost this game, which was probably their best remaining chance of trophy this season, indicates the game is over.
Managers at Ibrox have been fired for far less, and the clock is undoubtedly ticking before the Gers’ management slashes the 50-year-old.
