The most recent injury updates ahead of Liverpool’s trip to Aston Villa on Monday
Liverpool will be without three players for Monday’s penultimate Premier League game against Aston Villa.
The Reds enter the last week of Jurgen Klopp’s stint as manager with little to play for after Manchester City’s 4-0 thrashing of Fulham on Saturday rendered the Premier League championship mathematically impossible to win at Anfield this season.
However, numerous players will miss the Reds’ remaining games of the season, including Joel Matip, Thiago Alcantara, and Diogo Jota, who are all now sidelined with ailments of varied severity.
The ECHO looks at the latest injury news and potential return dates ahead of Monday’s trip to Villa Park.
Diogo Jota
Diogo Jota has been out since scoring against Fulham last month. He is yet to return to team training as the season ends.
However, with only two games remaining and the attacker still to return to training, it may be too much to ask for the Portugal international to show his fitness in time for Klopp’s final Anfield encounter against Wolverhampton Wanderers next weekend.
Possible Return Date: Unknown
Joel Matip
Joel Matip has missed the most of Liverpool’s season after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury against Fulham in December. As a result, it was expected that the 32-year-old, who is out of contract at the end of the season, would not play again this year.
Possible return date: next season.
Thiago Alcantara
Thiago Alcantara has been sidelined with a muscular injury since making his long-awaited return in February’s 3-1 defeat at Arsenal, and he is unlikely to play for Liverpool again this season. Like Matip, his contract will end in June.
In February, manager Jurgen Klopp provided an update on the midfielder, saying: “There is no timeline. I’m not sure, to be honest. There are a few things he needs to accomplish now from a medical standpoint, and I’m not sure if that will mean he can play again [this season].
Possible return date: next season.
