Southampton manager Russell Martin revealed that Che Adams has recovered from his injury and might play in the playoff final against Leeds United.
Daniel Farke’s team travels to Wembley Stadium to play the Saints on Sunday (26 May), hoping to make a quick return to the Premier League after missing out on automatic promotion.
While the Whites will have to do without Patrick Bamford, who is still out, Martin has stated that he is “delighted” to have both Adams and Stewart available to play in the capital.
According to the Daily Echo (24 May), he stated: “Che’s back, Ross Stewart is back, so it’s only Stuart Armstrong, Gavin Bazunu, and Juan Larios who are out, but they’ve all had long-term injuries.
“We’re thrilled to have Che back, as well as Ross back in full training. He took a knock last week, which is thrilling for us and fantastic for Che. Che was presumably out of contract with the EUROs just around the horizon, thus he could have easily made himself unavailable.
“He did everything he could to make himself available and come through training really well these last two days.”
Will Che Adams start for Southampton against Leeds United in the playoff final at Wembley Stadium?
Finally, a whole season has come down to Sunday’s game. Both Leeds United and Southampton (along with Leicester) were preseason favourites for promotion, and one of them will conclude the season disappointed.
Farke’s team shown against Norwich City that they are more than capable of destroying an opposing defence with ease, but they have also been guilty of letting their foot off the accelerator when facing Southampton in the past.
Bamford’s absence might be a significant setback at Wembley, but Joel Piroe impressed against the Canaries last time out, and the return of Sam Byram to the matchday squad should increase the Whites’ chances.
If Joe Rodon and Ethan Ampadu are at their peak, they will be able to prevent Adams or Stweart from becoming very involved in proceedings.
It will not be easy, but the centre-back duo has impressed in the second half of the season.
