Rhys Williams is believed to have extended his loan stay at Morecambe.

The English defender, who has nine professional Liverpool appearances, has signed a new contract that will keep him at the League 2 club until the end of the 2024/25 season.

The announcement was announced on X (previously Twitter), and the initial arrangement was supposed to expire in January.

The 23-year-old has made 25 appearances for the Shrimps (in all competitions) and scored twice.

Morecambe are currently second from bottom, 23rd in the League 2 table, with 20 points gained so far.

Williams has spent much of his professional career on loan, including spells with Swansea City and Blackpool.

Derek Adams celebrates the loan deal.

Morecambe manager Derek Adams acknowledged his satisfaction at being able to keep the youthful centre-back for the rest of the season.

“It’s great for him because I think he’s gone from strength to strength since being here,” the 49-year-old told morecambefc.com.

“He enjoys the Club and working with the staff and players, which I believe is very important.

“Quite easily, he could’ve moved on but that could’ve stopped his growth pattern, and I think staying here, playing week in week out, will benefit him in the long run.”

Williams is unlikely to receive senior playing minutes in the future, therefore we’re glad to see his growth in the game is being looked after in Lancashire.

Given that Joe Gomez and the highly promising Jarell Quansah (21) are in the ranks with Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate, it’s tough to see where an opening would have arisen.

We’d anticipate Liverpool to sell the player as soon as possible, given that his current contract with the club expires in the summer of 2026.
