Newcastle United had a relatively quiet summer transfer window last year as they followed the Premier League’s ‘Profit and Sustainability Rules’ – but esteemed journalist David Ornstein believes they will look to do business this time around, with their financial picture ‘painted encouragingly’.
The Magpies spent little money in the summer window at the beginning of the season. The £28 million spent on Lewis Hall in a loan-to-buy obligation deal with Chelsea last season was their marquee signing, while £15 million was spent on Sheffield United youngster William Osula, and a £20 million fee for Odysseas Vlachodimos from Nottingham Forest came only as part of a deal that brought homegrown star Elliot Anderson to the City Ground for nearly double that amount.
Ornstein: Newcastle Has ‘Encouraging Financial Picture’; Will Look to Do Business
Under Eddie Howe, the Magpies have the potential to significantly improve their roster.
Yankuba Minteh has also joined Brighton, and Miguel Almiron has returned to Atlanta United, allowing the Magpies to profit from trades since mid-June.

And as a result, Ornstein has painted a favorable image of the club to its fans ahead of the transfer window, suggesting that the club’s finances are looking promising and that Eddie Howe may want to conduct some summer business, even if it means being a little more cautious with their finances. He explained to NBC Sports:
“Newcastle revealed their financial reports last week, and they show a positive picture. Revenue has increased dramatically, but they continue to lose money, which is why they have failed to comply with the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules, forcing them to make some difficult decisions.
“We’ve seen a lot of players sold, and there aren’t as many new players joining the club. In terms of signings, I believe they would prefer to do business over the summer season, but they will still need to be very careful in balancing the budget.”
A right-winger is undoubtedly on their radar, as is a centre-back to partner Sven Botman in the long run, but the Magpies have yet to decide who they will sign.
Antoine Semenyo, Bryan Mbeumo, and Johan Bakayoko have all been identified as prospective left-winger possibilities, while Marc Guehi was a big centre-back transfer target last summer, but a deal for the England star was not completed despite four reported bids.
