David Ornstein says Liverpool will only make a move for Newcastle’s Alexander Isak on one condition

Liverpool have been linked with a move to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle United this summer.

The Sweden international is one of the best strikers in the world right now. He has been amazing for the Magpies for over a year now, and he is set to be a wanted man.

Arsenal have been heavily linked with Isak, and the 25-year-old would be absolutely perfect for Mikel Arteta’s system at the Emirates.

However, the Gunners face competition from the only team who have been better than them this season – Arne Slot’s Liverpool.

David Ornstein shares update on Liverpool’s pursuit of Alexander Isak

Isak is expected by many to be on the market this summer.

The Swede is closing in on the prime years of his career, and many feel that he will be on the move this summer if Newcastle United fail to qualify for the Champions League.

Liverpool could do with someone like Isak.

Darwin Nunez is expected to leave Anfield in the summer after failing to live up to his price tag. He has had a lot of problems and is not at the top of Slot’s pecking order.

Isak would be a huge upgrade, and David Ornstein has confirmed Liverpool’s interest in him. However, the journalist has revealed that the Reds will only make a move for the Swede if he is genuinely available for a transfer this summer.

Ornstein said in a Q&A on The Athletic: “They will obviously have multiple options on their radar but the only name I’ve personally heard of so far – which others have already reported – is Alexander Isak.

“Liverpool aren’t alone in liking the Swede – we know Mikel Arteta wants to sign him, Chelsea and Barcelona have been also been linked and I’m sure many other sides would be keen, too, if the opportunity arose. But that’s a big ‘if’.

“Newcastle have no intention of selling their best player and, understandably, don’t welcome this kind of conversation. Isak has more than three years left on his existing contract, he is very well paid and there’s no financial requirement for the St James’s Park hierarchy to cash in.

“Now, every player has their price and while I’m not aware of Newcastle specifically setting one for Isak, the number that seems to circulate around the industry is something like £150 million. Perhaps if teams are prepared to make such eye-watering offers there’s a conversation to be had. But Newcastle hold the aces here and their plan will be to build with, rather than without, him.

“Liverpool are only going to consider making a move if Isak is genuinely available; they’re not the type of club to engage in a wild goose chase. But I do think (sorry to say this, Newcastle fans) his future will be one of the big talking points heading into and during the summer transfer window.”

Which club is Alexander Isak more likely to sign for – Liverpool or Arsenal?

Liverpool and Arsenal are likely to go head-to-head for Isak’s signature if he is made available this summer.

Fans of Arteta’s side have been dreaming about the 25-year-old for over a year now, and many feel he could be the one to finally replace Thierry Henry at the Emirates.

However, journalist Steve Kay has claimed that Isak is more likely to join Liverpool than Arsenal in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Even Jamie Carragher believes Isak will pick Liverpool over Arsenal if he was given a choice before the start of next season.
