Few Liverpool players are feeling the same way Darwin Nunez is right now.
Since joining the Reds from Benfica in 2022, the club’s No. 9 has been a source of contention.
However, after struggling during his debut season last year, Nunez improved significantly in 2023/24.
The goals began to flow more readily, and he was picking up numerous assists and favorably impacting games on a weekly basis. However, Nunez has slipped again in recent weeks.
Liverpool’s inability to score goals has been attributed primarily to the 24-year-old. Nunez’s high-profile errors are becoming increasingly prevalent, and speculation that he could be traded this summer has begun.
Will Liverpool sell Darwin Nunez?
It should be noted that Nunez was an extremely costly piece of business for FSG. All all, his transfer might cost up to £85 million.
With his current reputation, the Reds are unlikely to be able to recoup it in the market this summer. Nonetheless, there may be an argument for Liverpool to cut their losses and sign a more clinical forward. Perhaps someone like Victor Osimhen.
Speaking to supporters in a Q&A for The Athletic yesterday, journalist David Ornstein stated that it would be surprising if the Reds decided to cut ways with Darwin.
“I very much doubt Nunez will be leaving,” Ornstein reports. “Whatever you think of his recent form, he has proven himself to be a good player for club and country, he is still young, Liverpool would not make much money by selling him now, and there is clear potential, in my opinion, for him to have a successful career at Anfield.”
“Now, if suitable offers come in for pretty much any player, Edwards, Hughes, and anyone else in their roles – including the board and ownership – will undoubtedly consider them.
“But that doesn’t mean they’ll be accepted, and there’s no signs of a dramatic revolution in Liverpool…” More likely, intelligent and necessary evolution.”
Should Liverpool sign a new forward?
If Nunez isn’t going anywhere – which we think is a good option – Liverpool might be able to bring him in for some help.
Of course, Mohamed Salah’s future here will have a significant impact. However, with Mo now off the boil, a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia may be too tempting to pass up this time.
If that happens, Liverpool will need to bring in someone who can score at least 20 goals per season. Nunez might still be that player, but the Reds could prefer a more dependable option.
Osimhen may be an interesting option in that regard, albeit the Napoli forward would come at a high price. Instead, Liverpool may consider someone like Eintracht Frankfurt’s Omar Marmoush.
Let’s wait and see, but if Nunez is sticking around, we should get him some assistance to get the most out of him.
