Leeds United are currently enjoying an incredible run of form.
Leeds have won seven of their eight games since the turn of the year, with four of those coming in the Championship, allowing them to reduce the gap on the top two.
Daniel Farke had a fairly established starting XI between October and December, but a terrible run of games over the holiday season has allowed periphery players like Ilia Gruev and Junior Firpo to step in and impress, which they have.
But, more recently, Willy Gnonto has taken advantage of a run of starts following Dan James’ injury in last month’s triumph against Norwich City at Elland Road.
James had been in excellent form up to that moment, with a goal or assist in every game of the calendar year 2024, and it was impossible to see Gnonto ever earning a chance in the side.
Farke must start Gnonto this Saturday.
Gnonto’s first start after James’ injury came in the FA Cup against Plymouth Argyle, when he struggled all afternoon.
However, the’special’ 20-year-old was able to score in last weekend’s triumph over Bristol City seven days ago, and his confidence has visibly increased since then.
Gnonto then scored again in the midweek triumph at Home Park, demonstrating just how brilliant he can be when he finds his rhythm and momentum.
With that in mind, Farke merely needs to start Gnonto against Rotherham United tomorrow to maintain the form he’s showed in the previous two games.
Leeds have a very busy February ahead of them, so James will have his chance to return to the starting lineup, but for the time being, don’t fix what isn’t broken.
