Burnley and Sheffield United, the promotion rivals, are now five points behind Leeds.
Leeds United are currently at the top of the Championship. The Whites took another step closer to promotion with a win against play-off contenders Coventry City Friday night.
A 13-game unbeaten league run has left the Whites in charge of their own destiny. They are five points ahead of Burnley and Sheffield United in the race for promotion.
Their success has been based on a solid defence. Daniel Farke’s team has kept an astounding 19 clean sheets in 31 games. Much-maligned goalkeeper Illan Meslier made two important saves to keep the Sky Blues at bay, giving United their sixth successive shutout for the first time since April 1981, according to Opta stat guy and Whites supporter Jonny Cooper.
Striker Joel Piroe, who started the score at the CBS Arena, said: “Sometimes, it’s extra difficult for him [Meslier] if you don’t have to do much the whole game and then suddenly you have to be there with a save, and he did outstanding today and really helped us as well.”
Right-back Jayden Bogle, who scored United’s second goal, hailed the team’s defensive organization against Coventry. “We delivered a good performance,” Bogle told LUTV. “We certainly could have scored a few more goals, but this is a good result. I just started driving with it, and it opened up. I got into the box and thought I’d overtake it, but it just fell to me again. It took some self-control to put it away. The keeper had it, and it just fell back out, so I put it in.
“It was a little more tough in the first half; they were compact, but we found a way through. Obviously, in the second half, with the advantage, it opened up a little more to provide us more space. Another clean sheet, and keeping clean sheets gives you every opportunity of winning games. “The more we can keep, the more we’ll win.”
