Cody Gakpo reveals what Virgil van Dijk has done behind the scenes at Liverpool that might make a significant difference in the title chase

Liverpool are now 11 points clear at the top of the Premier League table after getting the better of Manchester City on Sunday.

Mohamed Salah opened the scoring in the 14th minute before Dominik Szoboszlai ended the game as a contest in the 37th minute.

Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Manchester City, combined with Arsenal’s 1-0 loss to West Ham, has seen the Reds establish a gigantic gap at the summit.

Now, Cody Gakpo has revealed what happened in the Liverpool dressing room after the game, including what Virgil van Dijk did that was so important.

Cody Gakpo thinks Virgil van Dijk is eager to keep Liverpool players focused and relaxed.

Gakpo stated that Liverpool’s players were undoubtedly thrilled to return to the dressing room after defeating the reigning champions, but they did not get ahead of themselves.

The Dutchman stated that Arne Slot spoke “all the time” and that Van Dijk also spoke to his teammates to keep them “calm” and “focused”.

“I think when you come in straight after, you are happy,” Gakpo told the Liverpool media team.

“Obviously, the manager spoke a lot after the game, but the captain also spoke to keep us calm and focused on the games ahead because the season isn’t over with this win.

“We still have 11 games to go.” We have to do the same things over and over again until we get to the finish.”

The earliest that Liverpool may win the title

On paper, the earliest Liverpool could win the title would be on April 12, when they meet West Ham.

However, this would need Arsenal to lose all five of their previous games while Liverpool won all of theirs.

Liverpool currently averages 2.37 points per game this season, while Arsenal averages 2.03 points per game.

If both teams maintained their points-per-game averages, Liverpool could win the title if they defeat Chelsea on the weekend of May 3.

Liverpool are next in Premier League action on Wednesday night when they host Newcastle United in an 8:15pm kick-off at Anfield.
