Sutton couldn’t resist taking another swipe at the Light Blues after his previous team extended their already sizable lead at the summit.
After the match (1 March), he told X, “Be mindful of the gap.” Celtic had to earn it against a determined St Mirren side. Every time I see Engels, I grow to like him more.
“The Celtic bench made a significant difference. Maeda may be edging Kuhn for player of the year now. His goal was brilliantly taken. “Great awareness, great finish!”
Rangers will not catch Celtic anytime soon.
The sooner Gers fans and the board accept that they will not catch their arch rivals anytime soon, the better.
Then they can begin what will be a very long process to build a competitive squad and get the backroom in order.
The 49ers takeover of the Govan outfit should provide hope and less shareholder infighting, but it will not solve all of Rangers’ problems, whether that be on the pitch or in the boardroom.
The sacking of Clement was inevitable as results were not good enough, but it is not a silver bullet and form will not just skyrocket now that he has departed.
It will be a long path, with many setbacks, but the Light Blues fans and club officials must have faith in the proper manager to steer the squad through the difficult times and see the light at the end of the tunnel.
It is far too early to know whether that man is Ferguson; the comeback against Kilmarnock was encouraging, but the setback to Motherwell demonstrates that he still has a long way to go before proving himself.
The first truly telling evidence may be the Europa League round of 16 games against Fenerbahçe, and whether he can lead his team through a difficult test.
