Rangers defeated Fenerbahce in the Europa League on Thursday, giving Barry Ferguson the biggest win of his managerial career.
The Bears outperformed Jose Mourinho in the Europa League round of 16 first leg in Turkey, winning 3-1 thanks to goals from Vaclav Cerny and Cyriel Dessers.
Ferguson was appointed interim manager at Ibrox after Philippe Clement was fired, as the 49ers and Andrew Cavenagh prepare to take over the club.
Huge Ferguson update for Rangers
The Ibrox icon has made it clear that he is overjoyed to be in charge of Rangers, and his enthusiasm shown through in Istanbul last time out.
Ferguson is thought to be eager to take on the full-time manager role, but he may not get the opportunity.
According to Chris Jack, winning the Europa League would require something “extraordinary” to happen.
Speaking on the Rangers Review, he said: “I think when it comes to Barry, it would take something remarkable, like reaching a European final and possibly winning it, for him to be in the conversation.
“I would still be surprised if he was the Rangers manager heading into next season.”
The 49ers are preparing for a new era with the Rangers’ takeover.
The 49ers and Cavenagh have reached an agreement for a takeover, therefore it should only be a matter of time until it is approved and announced.
Ferguson has only coached three games, and the results have been mixed.
The victory at Fenerbahce was huge for everyone at Ibrox, but it came after another shocking home defeat to Motherwell, which has been a regular story this season.
Everyone is already drawing analogies to Roberto Di Matteo and Chelsea, when he was given a permanent role after winning the Champions League.
This is radically different considering the money and talent available to each, with Didier Drogba scoring against Bayern Munich and winning the penalty shootout.
If Rangers defeat Fenerbahce as expected on Thursday, they will face Roma or Athletic Bilbao in the quarterfinals, making the task even more difficult.
Something special happens with Rangers in Europe, and these Thursday nights are no surprise, as the Bears can beat anyone in front of them.
Ferguson will focus solely on the next game for the time being.
