Former Rangers player disagrees with Gerrard’s return speculation
After a failed tenure in Saudi Arabia, former Rangers manager Steven Gerrard is seeking for his next management opportunity. As talk about Philippe Clement’s future reignites, the Liverpool icon has come up in conversation.
Ally McCoist began discussion on Gerrard’s comeback, prompting others to consider if the 44-year-old would be a suitable fit for the club this time around.
Former Rangers and Liverpool Danny Wilson has weighed in on Gerrard’s potential return to Ibrox. The Anfield legend left Glasgow in 2021 after leading the team to the Scottish Premiership title; since then, his stints at Aston Villa and Al-Ettifaq have been more challenging.
“I think maybe there’s a group [of fans] that would want him back, but I think there’s also a group that, because of the circumstances in which he left, would not want him back,” Wilson said during a discussion on the Open Goal podcast.
“Brendan Rodgers has obviously gone back and won many of them over.” But there will always be a minority who will hold it against him [leaving for Leicester], and I believe Gerrard would be in the same situation if he went back.
“If he comes in after having a strong run, there may be more acceptance. But he hasn’t gone away and done well, so people would probably think, ‘Let’s go do something completely different.'”
