Liverpool must act quickly to complete several intriguing moves before the transfer window closes.
The Reds were idle for the first two months of the summer, preferring to let Arne Slot examine the team he had inherited.
However, now that the new head coach has had ample time to work with the Liverpool players, Slot has given the go-ahead to make acquisitions.
Liverpool are still attempting to sign Martin Zubimendi, and it appears that the Euro 2024 winner will arrive at Anfield soon.
And now, according to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, the Reds are considering making a solid attempt to capture another youngster who starred at this summer’s tournament.
Liverpool is in contact over the Giorgi Mamardashvili deal.
Assuming Liverpool can close the deal for Zubimendi, it would fill one of the greatest gaps in the current squad.
However, there are a handful of things that the Reds should attempt to complete before the August 30 deadline.
One question that may yet arise for Slot is what will happen with his goalkeeping department. Despite a relatively quiet transfer window, Caoimhin Kelleher could still depart Liverpool.
According to Romano, the Reds have now been handed the opportunity to future-proof whatever happens between the sticks by signing Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili.
“I can confirm the story that Liverpool has the possibility of signing Giorgi Mamardashvili and loaning him out,” the journalist reported on his Playback channel. “Liverpool have been given this option.
“Mamardashvili is seeking for opportunities in case they arise in the closing weeks of the market, and Liverpool has the opportunity to sign him now and loan him out. “Bournemouth and several other clubs are looking into loaning Mamardashvili,” Romano continues.
“However, Liverpool have yet to make a definitive decision on this one. They are aware of the chance, have spoken with those in charge of the transaction, and are fully informed of all details; now it is up to Liverpool.
“They must determine internally if they want to sign Mamardashvili for about 30 million Euros [£26 million], loan him out, and consider him a potential future goalie after Alisson, or pass up this opportunity and stick with their current goalkeepers. It’s on the table, and Liverpool must decide.”
Giorgi Mamardashvili is enthusiastic on the Liverpool agreement.
This is a fascinating narrative, and, as Romano confirms, Mamardashvili appears to be delighted to play a role in it.
“An important detail to say is that Mamardashvili would also be keen on this possibility,” he adds.
“He is open to saying, ‘Okay, I’m going to Liverpool. I won’t go right away because Alisson is the goalkeeper, but maybe in the future I’ll be the Liverpool goalkeeper.'”
“So, I’m ready to go on loan yet still remain a Liverpool player. Mamardashvili is open to that; it is now up to Liverpool.”
In our opinion, the Georgia international is unnecessary if Kelleher stays. If he leaves, the option becomes more tempting, but it does not appear to be something Liverpool actively needs. The money could certainly be better spent elsewhere.
