If fans were excited about the upcoming takeover, the hype has exploded over a snap from Turkey.
Hyped-up Rangers fans have seized on photos of the guy they believe will be tasked with masterminding a turnaround on and off the pitch.
Former Bolton player Gretar Steinsson was allegedly in Istanbul to take in a sensational 3-1 Europa League success over Fenerbahce. The former Icelandic full-back joined Leeds United in 2023 and received a significant promotion when he was headhunted to lead 49ers Enterprises’ global football structure in November of last year.
And it coincides with the 49ers and Andrew Cavenagh on the verge of acquiring the keys to Ibrox, with an agreement in place and due diligence beginning. Steinsson previously played for the Iceland FA and Tottenham Hotspur before moving to Elland Road as part of the NFL powerhouse’s quest to make an impact in European football.
And now Rangers are on the hit list, with punters excited for two reasons: first, Steinsson’s status in the game, and second, the latest evidence that a deal is likely, as Record Sport exclusively revealed the 49ers’ plans.
Interim coach Barry Ferguson raised his own profile as Steinsson and the 49ers debated what to do next. But the Ibrox side, living in the present, is unwilling to take Mourinho and Fenerbahce lightly ahead of a massive return to Glasgow on Thursday night.
Ferguson stated: “We are all aware that we have battled at Ibrox this season. I patted them on the back. They’ll go out and enjoy the night since I always say to celebrate the successes. But there’s no way the tie is over.
“I’d be an absolute idiot if I thought that because as I said I’ve got respect. I respect Fenerbahce and we need to go rest and recover and make sure we focus on Fenerbahce next Thursday. I’m telling you one thing, it’s going to be a real difficult time for us.”
