Liverpool is preparing a second proposal for Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon this summer.
That’s the opinion of senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke, who spoke on the latest episode of Football Insider’s Inside Track Podcast.
Liverpool’s first effort to get the winger was unsuccessful, and Newcastle also wanted Jarell Quansah involved in a potential move.
The Reds rejected that notion, and a cash deal may now be the priority, but the north-east giants want a “huge fee” for Gordon.
According to Football Insider, Newcastle would accept an initial £75-80 million, increasing to £100 million with add-ons, while holding out for a large profit on the player they purchased for £45 million from Everton in January 2023.
Gordon’s name had been suggested prior to June 30 as someone to cash in on as Newcastle grappled with financial and sustainability difficulties, but the club and Eddie Howe were desperate to retain him.
The Magpies did meet PSR after selling Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson, which relieved pressure on other prospective outgoings this summer.
Liverpool might have to consider different possibilities.
Even if Gordon is of interest to Liverpool, Howe does not want to lose him and has began planning for the upcoming season with him in mind.
Newcastle wants a minimum cost of £70 million, and sources claim Liverpool may find that figure too exorbitant.
That is why the Premier League’s top clubs may have to examine other choices this summer to strengthen their attacking side.
However, it remains to be seen whether Gordon wants to make the move when he returns from international duty, as this could present problems for Newcastle.
One reason Liverpool needs another winger is that Arne Slot plans to utilize Gody Gapko in a different position.
According to Football Insider, the Dutchman is set to become a full-time centre forward under the next manager beginning next season.
