According to The Sun on Sunday, Leeds United youngster Archie Gray is unlikely to join German heavyweights Borussia Dortmund due to a £20 million asking price.
The newspaper reported in its print edition on Sunday (June 23, page 56) that the midfielder is still in hot demand, with Manchester City, Liverpool, and Tottenham all interested in his talents.
During the 2023-24 season, the 18-year-old made 52 appearances for the Whites across all competitions, scoring once and assisting twice.
Is £20 million too much for Gray?
Even in today’s market, £20 million for the 18-year-old Gray appears costly, especially given his unimpressive return of one goal and two assists in 52 games for Leeds United last season.
While Gray is undeniably talented and receiving interest from elite clubs such as Manchester City, Liverpool, and Tottenham, his current statistics do not support such a high asking price.
Leeds United’s appraisal may be driven by Gray’s potential rather than his current productivity, but the fact that clubs like Borussia Dortmund are scared off by the fee indicates caution.
Unless Gray improves his goal-scoring and key-passing abilities, £20 million appears excessive for a player who has yet to establish himself regularly at the highest level. Clubs considering this amount must balance Gray’s potential with the immediate impact and value they could find elsewhere in the transfer market.
