Latest Leeds United headlines ahead of a busy week on the road for Daniel Farke’s team.
Leeds United’s pursuit for Championship promotion continued on Saturday with a dominant 3-0 home win over Rotherham. Crysencio Summerville scored twice, both with slick finishes after Patrick Bamford’s contentious opener.
Leeds won their sixth league game in a row, and Daniel Farke’s side has moved into the top two, despite having a busy week ahead with away visits to Swansea City and Plymouth Argyle. Meanwhile, the Yorkshire Evening Post has compiled a list of the most recent headlines from West Yorkshire.
Birmingham ‘near’ to Poveda
Birmingham City manager Tony Mowbray has claimed that his club came ‘very close’ to signing Ian Poveda on deadline day. The Colombian made his debut for new club Sheffield Wednesday against Birmingham on Friday, setting up Ike Ugbo with a beautiful moment of skill.
Poveda was a surprising late exit from Elland Road, but he expressed his wish to move on, with first-team opportunities at Leeds limited. The 24-year-old joined Wednesday on loan, but his contract in West Yorkshire will expire in the summer.
“Poveda is a good player, I must say,” Mowbray stated. “We came quite close to signing Poveda during the recent transfer window. He was a player I had at Blackburn Rovers and is a really gifted young man.”
Llorente deal is in doubt.
Leeds may miss out on the opportunity to cash in on Diego Llorente, with sources claiming Roma are unclear whether to trigger a £4.3 million option to make the defender’s loan permanent. Llorente is in his second season in Serie A, having signed on loan in January 2023.
According to GiveMeSport, Roma is weighing its choices ahead of the summer, and while Llorente has played consistently, they may decide not to invest the money to sign him permanently. Leeds may need to find another home for Llorente, who is under contract with the club until 2026. Leeds signed Llorente for about £18 million in the summer of 2020, following their elevation to the Premier League under Marcelo Bielsa. They hooked him down to a three-and-a-half-year contract in December 2022 with the goal of protecting his worth.
