Alan Brazil was left perplexed as Leeds United clawed their way to a dramatic, late victory over Hull City at Elland Road on April 1.
Liverpool loanee Fabio Carvalho cancelled out Sam Byram’s opener in the first half, and the game remained tied until Whites striker Crysencio Summerville scored from the penalty spot in the 88th minute.
Daniel James then sealed the victory, scoring Leeds’ third goal in stoppage time.
And Brazil couldn’t believe the outcome, which he contrasted to title-chasing Ipswich Town’s own last-gasp victory over Southampton, saying on talkSPORT: “The day before, what a day it was, Ipswich’s last kick of the game.
“Then Leeds, how Leeds beat Hull is beyond me!”
Leeds United’s late victory in the Yorkshire Derby
Leeds demonstrated the qualities that champions frequently possess, winning a hard-fought game late on against Hull.
They did not put on a vintage Leeds performance at Elland Road, losing the majority of possession to the visitors and failing to control the game, but they were ruthless and incisive in front of goal, capitalizing on their opportunities to secure all three points.
Unfortunately for Leeds, the standard of the Championship’s top teams this season has been such that their champion-like qualities have not been able to separate them from title rivals Ipswich and Leicester City, with only two points separating the three – though the third-placed Foxes have a game in hand.
To clinch automatic promotion back to the Premier League, the Whites must maintain their levels of excellence in their remaining six games, beginning with Coventry City on April 6.
