According to Adam Pope, Leeds United may be obliged to transfer players this summer if they do not earn promotion to the Premier League.
The BBC Radio Leeds writer wrote on the BBC Sport website on Thursday (11 April) that the Whites fared well in several metrics in 2022/23, with their accounts showing the club made a record profit of £189.7 million.
However, with £190 million outstanding in transfer fees, £73 million of which must be paid by the end of June, he said that failure to return to the top division this season will almost certainly result in players being sold at Elland Road.
“Off the pitch, United performed strongly by some metrics bringing in a record £189.7million,” he added. “However, the old saying goes that turnover is vanity and profit is sanity. When the company is unable to wipe its own brow, player sales are the only short-term solution.
“With £190m owed in transfer fees, of which £73m is due by the end of June alone, not returning to the Premier League will inevitably mean selling more of the family silver.”
Leeds United must win promotion this season.
Leeds must achieve promotion back to the Premier League this season, otherwise it will be much more difficult the next year.
That’s because keeping their present crop of players together would be incredibly difficult, with several of them likely eager to return to the top flight as soon as possible.
After putting themselves in such a good position with their form this year, it would be a big disappointment if they were unable to complete the task over the next few weeks.
The Whites have suddenly gone from being under no pressure because Leicester City and Ipswich Town appeared to be cruising to promotion, to being expected to win games.
But Daniel Farke has the experience to coach his men through what will undoubtedly be a difficult season as they seek a return to the top flight.
