Rangers have appointed Barry Ferguson as their head coach till the end of the season, which has raised some concerns, and Kris Boyd has responded.
The Ibrox club fired Philippe Clement on Sunday (23 February) following a humiliating 2-0 home loss to St. Mirren, and Issame Charai was tasked with directing the training session on Monday (24 February).
However, with a trip to Kilmarnock on Wednesday (26 February), Rangers rushed quickly to recruit Ferguson as a caretaker manager, alongside Billy Dodds, Neil McCann, and Allan McGregor in the backroom.
Because Ferguson’s contract only runs until the end of the season, speculation over who could take over at Ibrox in the summer abounds, with the former’s term perhaps being extended.
Rangers owners will choose a different path – Boyd
Boyd is confident that Ferguson and Co will help Rangers due to their history as club icons, but believes they are only seen as a short-term solution to the management dilemma.
The commentator believes the ex-captain may make a case for being named permanent manager at Ibrox by stringing together outstanding performances between now and the summer, but he believes the possible new owners will take a different approach nonetheless.
He confessed that he would be surprised if Ferguson was offered the managerial position on a permanent basis.
Boyd told The Scottish Sun’s Go Ballistic show (24 February): “I still believe that this will be a short-term situation. Yes, you can try to win every game and see where it takes you.
“It will undoubtedly improve your chances, but I believe Rangers will want to take a different approach in the long run.
“Maybe the new owners will want to come in and look…” They must have looked over everything right now, but you’d think they’d want a big say going forward.
“We’re not sure how much say they have in this. Are we complicit in what is going on right now, because there is no doubt that the previous week has harmed the Rangers brand?
“The performances against Queen’s Park and St. Mirren were poor, despite beating Hearts.”
“So, the place is low and there is no doubt that the guys will lift it and if they can get performances, get the fans back onside and see where it takes them, you never know, but I’d be astonished if, long term, that this is the way Rangers go forward.”
Paraag Marathe and the 49ers will decide on the new manager.
It was revealed last week that a syndicate, led by Paraag Marathe of 49ers Enterprises, is in advanced talks to take over Ibrox.
Rangers would have hoped to keep Clement until the conclusion of the season, but the gravity of the defeat against St Mirren forced them to fire him.
That is why Ferguson has been named interim head coach, with negotiations over a takeover currently taking precedence.
The Gers may wait till the negotiations are completed before choosing a permanent manager.
