Latest Nottingham Forest news as Chris Wood continues impressive Reds form in win over Fulham
With a neat turn and finish, Chris Wood made it 2-0 to Nottingham Forest against Fulham on Tuesday night – and perhaps strengthened the case for offering him a new contract at the same time.
The Reds forward is a man in form. His midweek strike was his third in as many games, his 12th of the season in all competitions and his eighth in his last nine Premier League outings. He is on fire.
It was a peach of a strike against the Cottagers. Wood recognized where the space was, saw a gap in Fulham’s defence, and took advantage of it. After receiving a wonderful pass from Murillo, the New Zealand international gathered the ball with his back to goal, turned, and shot past a flat-footed Bernd Leno. It was clever play.
Wood is a smart player. He also scores goals. And he’s blossoming under Nuno Espirito Santo.
Former manager Steve Cooper may have pushed for the striker’s move from Newcastle United, but the Welshman’s replacement has gotten the most out of Wood. It is turning out to be a fruitful partnership.
The Kiwi faced criticism early in his City Ground career, with questions raised over the price paid to convert his loan into a permanent transfer. However, the business appears to be doing well right now.
Wood requires maintenance, of course. He doesn’t always receive it, but when Forest supports him, he can deal harm.
Not long ago, the possibility of the Reds being without Taiwo Awoniyi for an extended period of time would have been reason for tremendous alarm. He remains a significant miss, not least because having as many attacking alternatives as possible is usually advantageous. However, it is debatable whether the Nigerian is the first choice up front right now.
Whatever happens between now and May, the summer will bring changes to Trentside. Which division they play in next season will influence their transfer ambitions, as will their financial status, but Forest will need to review their top-flight resources anyway.
They have several players with only a few months left on their current contracts, including Wood. At 32, he is nearing the end of his career, but there is little doubt he can still do a job. His expertise is also valuable, particularly given the Reds’ current situation.
Forest will have to make major decisions on numerous players’ futures in the next weeks and months. On one-year terms, a new contract for Wood may make a lot of sense.
