Anthony Gordon has been linked with a big move to Liverpool this month.
Liverpool are allegedly willing to rekindle their interest in former Everton star Anthony Gordon by making a player-exchange bid to Newcastle. According to reports, the England international would like to join an elite group of players who have represented both Merseyside clubs.
Gordon was connected with Liverpool earlier in the transfer window. However, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe believes that no negotiations have occurred between the two Premier League clubs.
Liverpool are looking to acquire a new winger, especially with the futures of Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah uncertain. Gordon has impressed for Newcastle but could be moved to assist the club avoid violating Premier League profit and sustainability rules.
According to Sunday World, Liverpool is considering an offer that includes players in return for Gordon. The Reds are said to have been ‘encouraged’ to step up their interest in the 23-year-old.
Gordon’s previous Everton experience would make the move controversial on Merseyside. He is said to have looked up to the great former Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard as a child.
Newcastle’s head coach, Howe, wants to keep Gordon. The attacker, who had 23 combined goals and assists last season, has been offered extra time off after representing England at Euro 2024.
“I’d welcome Anthony back with three arms if I could. “He’s a critical component of what we’re doing,” Howe stated earlier this summer.
“We have not had any acrimonious or nasty exchanges this summer. He’s always been the Anthony Gordon who has given his all to Newcastle, and I want to make that plain to all of our fans.
“Anthony needs a rest, but when he gets back, he’ll be ready to go. He’s an extremely crucial player for us. We did not want to lose anyone.
“Why would we want to lose our top players? We worked hard to make the correct judgments, but the last few weeks were really challenging.”
It is unclear who Liverpool may offer in a player-exchange deal. Arne Slot, the new Reds manager, inherits a solid group from his predecessor Jurgen Klopp and plans to strengthen further during the summer transfer window.
Slot has yet to make his first signing, although a winger is thought to be high on Liverpool’s list. The Reds may also recruit a new centre defender.
