Andy Murray has been evaluated by a former tennis opponent.
Alexander Bublik, Andy Murray’s former tennis opponent, has told him that he is clinging to the past after the Briton agreed to train Novak Djokovic. Murray resigned from tennis following last year’s Olympic Games and reconnected with Djokovic during the offseason.
Murray faced Bublik on the court five times, with the two-time Wimbledon winner winning three of them.
But Bublik believes Murray’s choice to team up with Djokovic was driven by the wrong reasons.
“Now he has joined Novak Djokovic’s team,” the Kazakhstani star stated. “These are attempts to grasp something that no longer exists, to hear echoes of the past. I believe this is a problem.
“I hope it will not be the same for me, but I can’t say for certain. Maybe at the age of 36, I’ll travel to the Challenger in Bangkok, but I hope to depart with peace of mind.
Bublik, who has only ever made it to the fourth round of a Grand Slam, also took aim at 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal, who retired at the end of last season aged 38.
“Yes, I want to leave at the peak,” said the 27-year-old. “It is evident that I am not Rafa, and my legacy, if it can be called that, will be significantly lesser. What occurred to Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal was a circus.
“I cannot call it anything else. People have accomplished everything; even we tennis players stared at them with mouths open in the locker room – and then you see one of them bald and elderly.
“It is apparent that he has changed and will never be the same. In my opinion, this is a shame rather than a circus. Perhaps it would be more appropriate to say so. Despite this, Rafa left regularly.
