‘An absolute nightmare’ A £165,000-a-week player said he should never have left Leeds United

Kalvin Phillips is one of the best players Leeds United has produced in recent years, but the midfielder has struggled since leaving Elland Road for Manchester City and now West Ham United.

Kalvin Phillips played a significant role in Leeds United’s elevation to the Championship and subsequent success in the Premier League for one season.

Phillips grew and elevated his game under then-Leeds head coach Marcelo Bielsa.

The 28-year-old was a force to be reckoned with, and he was expected to deliver when he joined Manchester City from Leeds in the summer of 2022.

After failing to make an impression at City, the England international midfielder joined West Ham United on loan in the January transfer window.

Phillips has underperformed at London Stadium. The midfielder has made three Premier League starts and two substitute appearances in the UEFA Europa League for West Ham.

Stan Collymore discusses former Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

Stan Collymore, a former Liverpool and England international striker, believes Phillips made the wrong decision by leaving Leeds for City.

Collymore said on Phillips in CaughtOffside: “I don’t think anyone is surprised that the 28-year-old hasn’t been named in the Three Lions’ newest squad. His performance has deteriorated dramatically since joining West Ham at the beginning of the year. He has had an awful nightmare.

“On loan Manchester City’s midfielder is living proof that accepting some deals may not be the greatest long-term decision. I’m sure he got a huge wage increase by leaving Leeds and joining City, and he has a token triple, but there’s no chance he’ll be back in that England squad in time for the Euros in the summer, so was it really worth it?

“What would he rather have?” — A treble of winners’ medals to which he made no significant contribution, or the opportunity to represent England and maybe win the country’s first major international medal since 1966?”
