Nottingham Forest have signed Alex Moreno from Aston Villa on a season-long loan.
The Reds have been looking for a left-back all summer, with Nuno Espirito Santo eager to strengthen his defence.
After Ola Aina hobbled out of the game in the second half on Saturday, it became clear that another left-back was needed.
Harry Toffolo deputised, and as usual, he delivered a solid albeit unspectacular job in his native left-back position.
Forest were interested in signing Bradley Locko following the Olympics, but the player suffered a ruptured Achilles, putting an end to any negotiations.
Moreno should now be in the Forest squad to face Southampton on Saturday, and he is pleased to have joined with the club.
Alex Moreno explains what surprised him about Nottingham Forest last season.
Last season, Forest defeated Aston Villa 2-0 at the City Ground, with goals from Ola Aina and Orel Mangala sealing the victory.
Moreno was on the bench when Villa lost that day, but he was astonished by the degree of noise generated at the stadium.
He is now looking forward to experiencing that roar firsthand and cannot wait to get started on Trentside.
On that day in November last year, he told the club’s official YouTube channel: “The stadium and the fans are incredible.” terrific day, terrific for the fans; it was a great day for them; it was loud and unexpected, and I believe they’re among the best in the Premier League for driving the team.”
Moreno may rapidly become a fan favourite at Forest.
At 31, this does not appear to be a long-term signing, but Moreno’s experience in a youthful defense unit could be a valuable asset.
The Spaniard has a long history of club football and was a fan favorite at Real Betis before joining Villa.
He assisted them with the Copa del Rey during his time in Spain, and Forest have acquired a guy who understands what it takes to win.
Forest will need to improve defensively this season if they are to progress in the Premier League, and Moreno can help.
As a left-sided player, he enjoys moving forward, and he hopes to begin demonstrating his abilities to the fan base soon.
Moreno’s all-action approach should appeal to fans, and if he gets off to a good start, Forest might have a successful season.
