Pundit Ally McCoist has made an early prediction on Arne Slot’s first season at Liverpool, and feels the Reds will fall short in the title battle.
Ally McCoist has rejected Liverpool’s chances of winning a title in Arne Slot’s first season in command.
Slot, who will begin his post on June 1 after Liverpool agreed to pay Feyenoord a £9.4 million settlement, is expected to take over as head coach rather than manager.
Liverpool’s title aspirations diminished under Klopp as the season progressed, with Manchester City and Arsenal taking the title battle to the wire. The Reds finished nine points behind the champions, but they secured a 2-0 victory over Wolves in Klopp’s final match.
Speaking on talkSPORT, McCoist expressed worries about Liverpool’s potential to challenge for first place in the 2024/25 season while Slot adjusts to his new job. He indicated that Liverpool’s younger players may not be capable of sustaining a title push against sides such as City and Arsenal.
“I don’t think Liverpool will be fighting for the title next season, I’ve just got a gut feeling,” he stated on Tuesday. “I’m just not convinced the younger ones are ready to take up the baton and carry on again. They dropped away a little bit [this season] after a fantastic effort,” according to the Liverpool Echo.
“Liverpool suffered a midweek defeat against Everton. There were just a few signals there that I’m not sure they have the consistency needed to win the league and compete at the top next year.”
Host Jeff Stelling stated, “Great squad, but whether it’s quite at the level of Arsenal and Manchester City is debatable.”
Adding to the argument, McCoist mentioned the uncertainties surrounding the team’s future, saying: “There are questions about whether people like Salah stay. They could all stay and add to it; you never know. Massive club, fantastic support, and they will undoubtedly rally around the new manager.”
