Leeds United’s defence has been one of the main discussion points of the summer transfer window so far.
The Whites have been connected with a variety of talent and have faced a seemingly never-ending saga in bringing Joe Rodon back to Elland Road.
Although the Rodon deal has been completed, Daniel Farke still lacks depth in the right back position.
Luke Ayling, Cody Drameh, Jamie Shackleton, and Archie Gray all left the club this summer, and when called upon, each was almost always deployed as a right-back.
This left Leeds with only Sam Byram as a viable option in that part of the pitch.
As you might think, the West Yorkshire club has been linked with a number of players, including Sunderland prodigy Trai Hume.
However, Farke was advised that it would cost at least £10 million to persuade him to leave the Stadium of Light.
That fee never seemed conceivable, and now that John Percy confirmed on Saturday (20 July) that the Whites have agreed to a £5 million deal for Sheffield United star Jayden Bogle, the move for Hume appears to be dead in the water.
Jayden Bogle is a stronger right-back option for Leeds United than Trai Hume.
Bogle is only 23 years old and already has extensive Premier League experience, not to mention that he will cost Leeds half of Hume’s salary.
Sure, the Northern Ireland international is a year younger than Bogle, but in the larger scheme of things, a year is insignificant.
Bogle is a great addition to Leeds’ lineup and could prove to be a wise investment by the end of the season.
He can play as a wing-back or full-back, so his versatility allows Farke to make tactical changes as needed and will undoubtedly assist strengthen Leeds’ defensive line.
Although Hume’s deal appears to be in shambles, that doesn’t mean another team won’t try to sign him.
It simply implies that, with the arrival of Bogle, it’s difficult to see why Leeds should bring in Hume this summer.
