Andoni Iraola, AFC Bournemouth’s manager, has stated he regrets starting former Leeds United winger Luis Sinisterra in the club’s recent draw with Manchester United.
The 24-year-old has missed Bournemouth’s previous three league games due to injury, but was assessed fit to face the Red Devils. He only lasted 39 minutes on the field before succumbing to a hamstring injury and being replaced by Lloyd Kelly.
Speaking to the Daily Echo, Iraola admitted he regretted starting the Colombia international. He admitted, “I regret beginning him. However, he was training exceptionally well this week. The decision was properly thought out.
“Probably not an ideal position, but we lost Tav [Marcus Tavernier] and Antoine [Semenyo] the other day. If I hadn’t watched him do so well this week, I would not have made this decision.
“But he was very confident, he was training at a high level, and that is why we made the decision. Sometimes you have to take a risk. It can sometimes be effective. I have to thank him because he was the first to express an interest in playing from the start. However, it is clear that he most likely harmed himself again.”
Sinisterra was troubled by injuries in his first season at Leeds, having moved from Feyenoord in the summer of 2022. He was earmarked as Raphinha’s replacement, but fitness issues prevented him from reaching the same heights as the Brazilian.
He made two Championship games for Leeds following their relegation, although it was evident he wanted to go. On the final day of the summer transfer window, he joined Bournemouth on loan, while Jaidon Anthony moved in the opposite direction.
His move was then made permanent for a sum estimated to be worth £20 million.
