According to sources, the club has warned the £10 million player that they will listen to offers, with Leeds in hot pursuit

Borussia Monchengladbach had previously promised Nico Elvedi that they will consider offers for the defender, with Leeds United showing increased interest, according to Bild.

The German daily said (2 January) that when Elvedi, 28, signed his last deal with Gladbach 18 months ago, the Bundesliga club vowed to be open to future proposals from England after an agreement with Wolves was halted.

The 56-cap Swiss international is valued at over £10 million, and Daniel Farke, who previously worked with Elvedi at Gladbach, appears to be looking to add important defensive depth this month.

As reported by GiveMeSport (31 December), Elvedi may prefer to wait and see if Leeds earn promotion to the Premier League before deciding on his future next summer – by which time he will have been a Gladbach for a full decade.

Leeds United want Nico Elvedi in January

Leeds United are aiming to stamp down their authority in the January transfer window, and would pull off a deal most of the Championship could only dream of if they can prise away an established European defender for an eight-figure sum mid-season.

Elvedi, who has played over 300 times for the German club, is a versatile Swiss defender whose “dream” is to play in the Premier League, according to TEAMtalk (1 January). Leeds remains confident in acquiring him.

Wolves, on the other hand, remain interested, having gone close to reaching an agreement in the summer of 2023, while RB Leipzig may offer an improvement while remaining in the Bundesliga [GiveMeSport, 31 December].

With Gladbach’s position weakened as a result of the arrangement reached with Elvedi’s camp during his last deal, the January transfer could be determined by whether the player is ready to take a chance on steering the Whites back to the Premier League this season.
