The Daily Mail reports that Leeds United have begun discussions to recruit Fortuna Dusseldorf midfielder Ao Tanaka.
On August 27, the tabloid said on its website that the 25-year-old might fly into the UK as early as Tuesday evening to finalise his move to Elland Road.
It is understood that the Japan central midfielder has a £2.65 million release clause in his Fortuna contract, and there is optimism that a deal can be completed soon so that he can face Hull City this weekend.
Leeds United are on the approach of making another new signing.
Manor Solomon’s loan move from Tottenham is now complete, therefore Gretar Steinsson and co. can move on to Leeds’ next target.
Tanaka is a name that Leeds supporters are likely to recognise.
After performing for Japan in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the midfielder has been linked with a move to Elland Road.
Of course, a move did not happen back then, but it appears that it will now, with the Japanese ace in the final year of his contract with Fortuna Dusseldorf, who play in German football’s second division.
Tanaka has already appeared four times for the 2.Bundesliga club this season, playing 90 minutes each time.
He will be a significant loss for them, but he might be a fantastic addition for the Whites for what appears to be a very reasonable fee of £2.65 million.
