Jon Newsome claimed that Ethan Ampadu was probably fortunate not to be sent out for Leeds United in their win over Sheffield Wednesday on Friday night, after the captain made a reckless challenge while already on yellow.
Ethan Ampadu was outstanding once again as Leeds kept another clean sheet in the Championship promotion battle. However, while Ampadu was terrific, he was maybe fortunate to play the entire 90 minutes at Hillsborough.
The Welshman was booked near the conclusion of the first half after attempting to halt Ike Ugbo. And he showed no hesitancy in getting dug in as the full-time whistle approached.
Ethan Ampadu was fortunate not to be sent off during Leeds’ victory.
In fact, some Sheffield Wednesday fans may have been irritated that Sam Allison took advantage late on rather than halting play after Ampadu committed a foul. The Owls were able to run at Leeds’ penalty area and get a shot on goal. However, the referee was unable to resume play after a yellow card was issued.
Jon Newsome told BBC Radio Leeds that the 23-year-old was fortunate not to receive a second yellow card.
“Ampadu’s a bit fortunate there,” he remarked.
“Even if it was a foul, the referee was not going to stop it because Wednesday were in control, which worked out well for Ampadu. If he wasn’t already on a yellow, he would get a yellow, but the referee is debating whether to send someone off for that.”
Whites avoid disappointing finale to a very excellent evening.
It would have been a huge disappointment if Ampadu had been sent off in the last minutes. This season, he has been a constant presence for Daniel Farke’s Championship team. And he’s built an excellent partnership with Joe Rodon.
Leeds were still ensuring that Wednesday did not set up a tight finale. Ampadu had to make one clearance off the goal line.
The referee did not send Ampadu off, so it felt like we got away with one. However, the official will likely claim that Wednesday presented a promising opportunity to attack. And if he thought it was a challenge deserving of a second yellow, there would have been no way to take advantage.
