In an interview with Give Me Sport, journalist Dean Jones believes Georginio Rutter could receive interest from a few teams during the summer window if Leeds United do not earn promotion at the conclusion of the season.
The Whites had a poor start to the season, which wasn’t ideal given how well Leicester City and Ipswich Town performed in the first few months.
But Leeds has gone unbeaten in the league so far in 2024, and they have benefited greatly from this record, rising to the top of the Championship standings.
Leicester may have a game in hand, but given how far ahead the Foxes were in the table compared to others earlier, Daniel Farke’s side’s ability to overcome them is an outstanding feat.
However, there is still much work to be done in their desire to return to the Premier League at the first opportunity.
The automatic promotion race is still very tight at this stage, and Southampton hasn’t even dropped out of the top two.
Dean Jones discusses Georginio Rutter’s future with Leeds United.
The momentum is currently with Leeds, and they have less games remaining than the Foxes, which could work in Farke’s benefit.
If promotion is not secured, some key players would almost certainly leave Elland Road, but transfer insider Jones believes Rutter is not one of them.
He told Give Me Sport: “Rutter was a big deal when Leeds signed him, and he obviously got off to a sluggish start, but things are looking good now. He has appeared in practically every Leeds encounter and will feel an important part of the team.
“He will be motivated to return to the Premier League, and at the moment, it appears like he will be able to do so with Leeds, which I believe is excellent for him.
“However, if Leeds are not promoted, we may see a few clubs interested in him. I’m not saying he’ll quit, but this is a crucial moment for Leeds, and failing to get up may lead to the team splitting apart slightly.
Georginio Rutter could have a major Leeds United transfer headache this summer.
Jones is probably correct regarding Willy Gnonto and Crysencio Summerville.
Gnonto has yet to sign an extension, and you believe his exit is possible as a result, while Summerville has done more than enough to play top-flight football next season, with or without his current team.
Rutter is an intriguing character.
He didn’t have the best start at Elland Road, but he has done exceptionally well this season and is thriving under Farke.
Leaving in the summer would be risky, regardless of league, so it wouldn’t be the worst idea for the attacker to stay in West Yorkshire for at least one more season.
