Sky Sports commentator Andy Hinchcliffe criticized Crysencio Summerville for a “poor” finish in the first half of Leeds United’s game against Bristol City.
The Dutch star was part of the Leeds team that beat the Robins 1-0 at Ashton Gate on Friday (2 February), due to Wilfried Gnonto’s second-half goal.
Summerville, who had returned to the team after missing the FA Cup match with Plymouth Argyle the last time out, was guilty of squandering a fantastic opportunity following an error by George Tanner.
During Sky Sports’ live coverage of the game, co-commentator Hinchcliffe said: “So fortunate to escape there under no real pressure George Tanner.
“He laboured on the ball, which is the problem; you can’t afford to do that against Leeds; as a team and individually, they’ll push you.
“I’m not saying Summerville made the wrong decision because he sees the keeper is well off his line and believes he can dink it over him; he just doesn’t get underneath the ball enough, and it’s a terrible finish in the end.
“He could have gone around the goalkeeper.” It was probably the appropriate decision to dink it over him; he simply executed it incorrectly.”
Crysencio Summerville’s moment doesn’t cost Leeds United.
Given Summerville’s 12 Championship goals this season from the left flank, you’d have put your life savings on the Dutchman burying this chance after robbing Tanner and going one-on-one.
Unfortunately, he dinked it straight into the appreciative home goalkeeper’s arms and buried his head in his hands, knowing he had squandered a golden opportunity to put the Whites ahead in a game that had not yet sparked.
Crysencio Summerville squandered a fantastic opportunity as Leeds United defeated Bristol City in the Championship.
It was a night when Leeds lacked shooting ability, and it took a superb goal from Wilfried Gnonto, who was given a rare league start, to get Daniel Farke’s side going.
The three points put Leeds in the top two for the first time this season, putting pressure on Southampton and Ipswich Town ahead of their games against Rotherham United and Preston North End on Saturday (3 February).
