Latest Aston Villa news from BirminghamLive as Gary Neville believes Premier League teams’ expenditure on transfers ‘will soar’ again in the summer.
Gary Neville believes Premier League teams’ transfer spending “will explode” in the summer following a quiet January transfer window.
Morgan Rogers was Aston Villa’s significant January signing, costing up to £15 million, while the club also signed Kosta Nedeljkovic, Joe Gauci, and Lino Sousa. However, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester United did not sign any new players, while Chelsea did not spend as much money as in past transfer windows.
On Friday, after deadline day, Neville told Sky Sports News: “Yesterday we got the window we’ve always talked about in the football community. We’ve always said that January is the most challenging period to conduct business.
“Probably the odd thing is that last year, when you were nearly spending £900 million in January, it contradicted everything we said about the game because we discussed the difficulties and challenges.”
“There is no denying that Covid is catching up with teams. The danger of genuine penalty, as well as the Premier League’s crackdown on FFP. There is plenty of caution.
“I don’t consider it a terrible thing. Perhaps this is the beginning of something that will lead to more sustainability and smartness in this window in the future.”
“I expect the summer to burst again. The TV money remains the same, so the income continues to flow into the clubs,” he continued.
“I don’t believe it’s an issue of teams not having enough money. Perhaps Covid and the losses have caught up with them. Perhaps a little newer approach, thinking about things in a more measured way.
“The main point might be that FFP appears to be working. Manchester United has spent hundreds of millions of pounds and is approaching FFP.
“It is not just Everton and Forest that are near the bottom of the league and attempting to catch up. The clubs at the top must proceed with prudence.”
