Senegal’s withdrawal from the African Cup of Nations comes at an ideal time for Tottenham, as important midfielder Pape Matar Sarr is about to return to the club.
Ivory Coast defeated Senegal on penalties in the round of 16. Sarr remained composed as he hammered home his penalty, but he ultimately lost.
His return is especially important for Spurs, given their approaching rigorous schedule of three games in ten days. The club will face Brentford on January 31st, then travel to Everton on February 3rd before hosting Brighton on February 10th.
The 21-year-old is now enjoying his breakout season at the club under new manager Ange Postecoglou, having appeared in 18 games and started 16.
He has two goals and two assists in the Premier League this season, including a goal in Spurs’ final game against Bournemouth before departing for the African Cup of Nations.
Sarr has been an important element of Postecoglou’s system, earning a regular berth in the lineup alongside Yves Bissouma, ahead of players such as Hojbjerg and Skipp.
His achievements won him a new long-term deal, which he signed shortly before leaving for the AFCON.
The midfielder’s comeback will definitely be a huge boost for Postecoglou, who is expected to team him with Rodrigo Bentancur in the midfield pivot until Bissouma returns.
