Leeds United are doing everything they can to prevent a “big” points deduction next season after selling Crysencio Summerville to West Ham.
That is the opinion of finance specialist Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that Leeds must adhere to the financial guidelines because a points deduction would be “disastrous” for their promotion aspirations.
Summerville is the second big-name star to leave Elland Road, following Archie Gray’s £30 million move to Tottenham to ensure the Championship club did not over its spending limits for 2023-24.
The 22-year-old joined West Ham for £25 million plus add-ons, which is far less than Leeds were thought to be seeking for at the start of the transfer season.
Leeds United owners will not risk landing points deduction.
Borson indicated that the club’s owners are not willing to risk breaking the financial restrictions and jeopardizing their hopes of promotion back to the Premier League.
“I think there will be a financial element to the Summerville deal,” Borson told Football Insider.
“But they must also consider how they can spend in the team in order to reclaim their Premier League position.
“We know the new Leeds owners have enormous intentions.
“But one thing they can’t do is risk a significant points deduction in the EFL next season.
“That would be bad for them, as they will want to return to the Premier League as quickly as possible.
“They won’t want to risk dropping from a promotion spot to a play-off spot, or maybe out of the play-offs altogether.
“You can understand their decision to sell players since they do not want to take any risks with PNS.
“But the fee for Summerville looks possibly less than we would have thought.”
