Leeds United are expected to turn down West Ham’s interest in acquiring Crysencio Summerville, with the club demanding a £40 million fee, according to talkSport.
According to the outlet’s website on July 30, the sale of Archie Gray to Tottenham for the same sum has strengthened the Whites’ resolve to demand a high fee if they let another star leave, which is proving too much for the Hammers.
Julen Lopetegui’s side is only willing to go up to roughly £20 million and is currently “on the verge of pulling out” of the pursuit.
On July 22, Fabrizio Romano stated that West Ham had made an approach for Summerville, 22, but wanted it to be a “very expensive” trade.
Tottenham Sale Strengthens Leeds United against Hammers
It would be difficult to find a Whites fan who was not devastated by the departure of homegrown teenager Gray, especially because Joe Rodon arrived on a permanent basis from Spurs at the same time.
However, the chance to retain last season’s Championship Player of the Season could be a significant advantage in making a second push at promotion.
With Everton reportedly backing away from Willy Gnonto [Football Transfers, 29 July] after acquiring Jesper Lindstrom, recent developments will undoubtedly strengthen hopes that more big-name players will not follow Gray and Glen Kamara out until they agree to Leeds’ terms.
Even if West Ham abandons their pursuit of Summerville, Daniel Farke will not be out of options, with Rennes interested in adding him to Kamara [L’Equipe, 16 July] and considerable interest elsewhere in the Premier League.
Brighton has already made an approach during the summer window [Fabrizio Romano, 17 June], and Liverpool and Chelsea are both said to be interested [The Sun, 28 May].
Arne Slot’s Anfield side could pose the greatest threat in a relatively quiet market for them, which would be especially disappointing at Elland Road given the club’s previous attempts to appoint the Dutchman before to Premier League relegation.
