Former Leeds United midfielder David Norris says that while the signing of Joe Rothwell may not have piqued fans’ interest, he anticipates more “thrilling” arrivals in the future.
Rothwell was confirmed as a new loanee at Elland Road, joining from AFC Bournemouth until the end of the season.
According to Norris, having been promoted on loan at Southampton last season and previously playing in the Premier League, he provides more valuable experience to the group.
“I don’t think fans will be overjoyed at first because they want players who will get bums off seats, but he has pedigree and could be a good signing for them,” the former Whites player exclusively told MOT Leeds News.
“It’s wonderful that they’re bringing guys in because there have been so many players connected to leaving the club.
“Whilst there may be more thrilling ones to come, he knows the level and can be a decent signing.”
Rothwell gives Leeds United crucial midfield depth.
With the losses of Archie Gray and now Glen Kamara from Elland Road, Leeds United felt the need to add center midfield depth, and Rothwell fits the bill.
Despite rarely starting in Russell Martin’s Southampton side, it is impossible to discount the value that a player with pedigree can offer to a dressing room, and the former Blackburn player will gain from the experience.
Daniel Farke is unsure who other players of his squad may depart the club as he strives to assemble a stable group in pre-season, but more midfield recruitment will be on the agenda, with Rothwell joining Ilia Gruev and Ethan Ampadu as central possibilities.
Oliver Skipp has returned to the forefront of Leeds’ stated targets, having faded slightly after Joe Rodon became the Tottenham player linked in the Gray deal.
Over the course of the team’s long season, it would not be surprising to see up to four central midfielders arrive to bolster the group.
