According to Leeds Live, Joe Rothwell’s entrance to Leeds United does not cover Glen Kamara’s departure this summer.
According to Beren Cross for the outlet’s website on July 13, the Bournemouth midfielder’s loan signing has not cleared the way for the former Rangers player to go, despite widespread conjecture.
Rennes are allegedly still interested in signing the 28-year-old Finn, but have yet to make a proposal.
Separately, Leeds All Over reports that sources have indicated that any Kamara sale will result in the 49ers seeking a straight replacement, notwithstanding Rothwell’s presence.
Rennes is interested in Leeds United ace a year after Rangers’ arrival.
Rothwell’s arrival appears to be similar to the previous Bournemouth loan signing in that he will serve as cover more than anything else.
Jaidon Anthony joined Elland Road a year ago after Luis Sinisterra fought his way back into the Premier League at the last minute, but the winger struggled to get past Crysencio Summerville, Dan James, and Willy Gnonto.
Daniel Farke has already lost one standout midfielder from last season with Archie Gray’s departure to Tottenham, and the dwindling options in central defence may compel Ethan Ampadu to play in the back line.
So, after a decent loan spell at Southampton last season, it appears that Rothwell was a cheap, accessible reinforcement who, at 29, can provide a seasoned presence in a youthful squad.
Losing Kamara would be a disappointment after he impressed so much last season, while Ilia Gruev has also piqued the Bundesliga’s interest [Sky Sports Germany, 3 June].
So it will come as some relief that the 49ers aim to make more acquisitions if first-team options leave, even if the new season is quickly coming and there is still a lot of transfer market work to be done as things stand.
