Cody Gakpo has helped Holland reach the semi-finals of Euro 2024.
Cody Gakpo has stated that his ideal position is playing off the left wing.
The Liverpool forward has been Holland’s talisman in Euro 2024. Gakpo has scored three goals and forced an own goal in a 2-1 quarter-final victory over Turkey to assist Ronald Koeman’s team reach the competition’s final four. They play England on Wednesday night.
Gakpo joined Liverpool from PSV Eindhoven for an initial £37.5 million in January 2023. He arrived after scoring nine goals and assisting 12 times in 14 league games for PSV during the first half of the 2022-23 season.
Despite this, he has primarily been used as a central striker since his arrival at Anfield. Chances to play on the flank have been limited because previous Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp favored Luis Diaz.
However, Arne Slot has taken over as Liverpool manager, succeeding Klopp. At his first news conference, the new head coach stated that he had an opinion on Gakpo, who has 23 goals in 79 Reds appearances, and what his ideal role is.
And the 25-year-old is convinced that this is where he has been starring for Holland. Prior to the semi-final against England in Dortmund, he stated: “I will play on the left wing in this tournament.” I also played a lot as a striker for Liverpool. I’ve always been a left winger. This has always been my preference. But during the last year and a half, the coach has needed me in numerous positions, and you must be prepared. I did the best I could.”
Gakpo has stood out at the Euros, with his ability to cut in from the wing and score becoming his signature. However, the 29-cap international insists he tries to alter his style. He continued, “Sometimes I try to get outside or provide an earlier cross. Then they have to adjust to what I am going to do next time.
“I try to play as diversely as possible on the left. Inside or outside, cross to the right or left, and occasionally play into midfield or back to Nathan [Ake] or Micky [van de Ven].”
