According to James Pearce, Adrian could turn down Liverpool’s offer of a one-year contract extension.
A return to the ‘amazing’ footballer’s (as Jurgen Klopp famously characterized his performance in the European Super Cup, per the Guardian) homeland could be in the works this summer.
“Slot may need to recruit a backup ‘keeper if, as expected, Adrian turns down the offer of a new one-year deal and returns to Spain to sign for boyhood club Real Betis,” a journalist at The Athletic stated.
With Caoimhin Kelleher also seeking for more first-team minutes, the Reds may need to sign a top second-choice ‘keeper during the window.
Pearce went on to say that an interested party has yet to come forward with an offer to sign the Republic of Ireland goalkeeper for £25 million.
Kelleher transfer: Liverpool could benefit from keeping him
Richard Hughes and his teammates could do without having to fill two reserve goalkeeping positions in the foreseeable future.
Kelleher, in particular, has been nothing short of incredible as a stand-in for Alisson Becker in goal.
It is to the 25-year-old’s credit that standards have not deteriorated significantly during his time in goal. With that in mind, it would be quite difficult to locate a substitute capable of meeting such high standards.
Of course, the former Ringmahon Rangers player is perfectly entitled to a move if he so desires.
