Tottenham are “increasingly likely” to recruit Archie Gray from Leeds United on Sunday, June 30, according to David Anderson.
The Mirror columnist, writing on his personal X account (30 June), alleges that the north London club is close to signing the 18-year-old midfielder after his transfer to Brentford fell through.
Spurs had been interested in signing Gray all summer and were compelled to act when Brentford were granted permission to do a medical ahead of a £40 million move [Nizaar Kinsella, 29 June], only for Leeds to reject their approach due to payment circumstances.
Leeds United fans are pleased to sell Archie Gray to Tottenham.
Gray’s move to Brentford sparked outrage among fans, who believe he is far superior to that level.
The Whites are expected to play at a level too low for Gray, despite his age, and with top six clubs keen, as well as European powers, there is a belief that they will make an offer too good to refuse.
But that offer was meant to come from a larger club than Brentford, and it appears that the information was leaked in order to force those clubs to act.
Leeds needed to sell to comply with FFP and PSR regulations, and the player is now open to a transfer elsewhere after being made aware of the circumstances.
At this point, it’s a matter of when, not if, he departs Elland Road, and it appears that he’ll be traveling to north London rather than west London.
