Paul Robinson has suggested that a points deduction might be extremely detrimental to Leeds United if they are unable to comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules.
Although the addition of Red Bull as minority shareholders will help to stabilize the finances at Elland Road, Leeds must still collect monies through player sales in order to stay within the PSR limitations.
This could mean that Crysencio Summerville, Archie Gray, and Wilfried Gnonto are all sold this summer, leaving Daniel Farke with a small squad for the 2024/25 season.
Robinson told MOT Leeds News exclusively that staying in the Championship was always going to be the case. When a team remains in the Championship or is demoted to the division, if the financial situation isn’t optimal, they risk losing their best players.
“The chairman hasn’t disguised it. He has stated that they would need to lose a few players, which is understandable. It is about how they will rebuild after the financial losses, FFP and PSR. A points deduction would be a significant blow.
“Sheffield United will begin the Championship with a two-point deduction next season. We understand how difficult the Championship is. A point deduction is the last thing Leeds wants. They will have to sell players.
“There could be up to 20 players leaving this summer, including Cody Drameh and Stuart Dallas joining the coaching staff, Ian Poveda and Joe Rodon possibly getting a permanent move, Sam Byram, Shackleton, Jaidon Anthony on loan, Connor Roberts on loan, Luke Ayling joining Middlesbrough, and uncertainty over Liam Cooper’s future, all of whom have been on the fringes of the team.
“Put Archie Gray, Wilfried Gnonto, and Crysencio Summerville into the mix; there’s a lot of rebuilding to do this summer. Trading will be critical to balancing the books and fielding a competitive group capable of attacking the Championship next season.”
Leeds United hope to prevent PSR infractions this summer.
Before the Championship play-off final, the Daily Mail projected that Leeds would need to generate up to £100 million in player sales, although these figures will now be distorted by Red Bull’s new investment.
Despite this, Farke will be expected to use his past experience in the division with Norwich City to propel the Whites back into the Premier League at the second time of asking.
