They’ve been involved in six play-offs over the course of over three decades, all of which have ended in defeat.
Some would say that’s typical of Leeds United since they have a significant mental barrier in big games, as evidenced by their 1-0 defeat to Southampton on Sunday.
When Dan James struck the crossbar, it sent shivers down the spines of both sets of fans because the game was nearing to a finish and it might have changed everything.
After going behind to an early Adam Armstrong goal, the Yorkshire team was unable to play their natural game, and Russell Martin was once again outperforming Daniel Farke strategically!
Southampton were the only team to win both games against Leeds during the regular season, and it showed at the football stadium.
Neil Warnock made it plain that “the best team won tactically,” despite his strong regard for the man in the Elland Road dugout.
When James’ thundering shot hit the crossbar, Warnock told Sky Sports Football that he immediately looked down at the Leeds boss and realized that ‘he knew’ that was it, and the game was over.
There was very little time remaining, and if the Whites had been lucky, that effort would have gone in, but Leeds will spend another season in the Championship.
Leeds United lost the play-off final to Southampton.
“When James hit the crossbar, I looked down at Daniel (Farke) and I think he knew,” Warnock remarked.
“When that struck the crossbar, I believe he realized it wasn’t going to be. He should not punish himself because he has done an excellent job. He is a beautiful man, and I believe he is an effective boss.
“However, I believed the best team won tactically. Look at that here; it’s a volley, the goalkeeper has no chance, and it goes in anyhow. That’s in, it’s a different game, and they’re winning. That’s football, and you need a little luck, a referee decision, or the smallest of details.”
Huge strain on Daniel Farke.
You don’t see the manager leave, whether he’s going on or being booted out.
However, this setback puts a lot of pressure on him for the upcoming season, as nothing but promotion is expected.
Two of the relegated teams, Leicester City and Southampton, performed admirably, so Leeds can make no excuses in that aspect.
The problem for the club is that if you offered them a play-off finish next season, fans would most likely reject it because they know what’s coming.
But now it’s time to deal with the present; people like Crysencio Summerville will most likely depart, and they best hope he’s the only one.
