Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez has addressed Jurgen Klopp’s exit as Reds boss amid concerns of potential discontent.
Darwin Nunez sought to downplay suggestions of a feud with Jurgen Klopp after confessing his “shock” at the German’s departure as Liverpool manager.
Klopp left Anfield last week after nearly nine years in command, and will be replaced by Feyenoord manager Arne Slot, who will take over as head coach on June 1.
Nunez raised eyebrows when, less than a fortnight after deleting practically all Liverpool-related photographs from his Instagram account, he was seen not applauding Klopp during the guard of honour following the German’s final game in charge at home to Wolves last weekend.
The Uruguayan, on the other hand, was observed later that day dancing with Klopp at a farewell party for the manager, other coaching staff, and players leaving this summer.
Nunez has now confirmed that there is no problem with the guy who was instrumental in the striker’s probable club record £85 million transfer from Benfica to Liverpool two years ago.
“We were all a little shocked by Klopp’s departure, no-one expected it,” Nunez remarked. “It’s a shame he’s leaving.
“I personally wanted him to depart on a high note, winning, but that did not happen. It’s also unfortunate for the players. I wish him the best in the world.
While Liverpool fell out of contention for the Premier League title in the final weeks and lost in the FA Cup and Europa League quarter-finals, they had previously won the League Cup against Chelsea in a final in which Nunez was injured.
Nunez is already in Uruguay to begin preparations for the Copa America later this month, with the national team playing a friendly against Costa Rica early next Saturday morning.
Speaking to Uruguayan news source El Pais, the Liverpool forward added: “The objective is to take it one step at a time. The first goal is to go through the group stage, then fight all of the games and do our best to win the cup.
“We have already demonstrated against Brazil and Argentina that we are a team of many young players on the right track.” We all have good qualities, and there is a reason why we are in the national squad and large clubs.”
