Jamie Carragher has now suggested that a Liverpool player should never have left the club in the past.
It’s already been a year of significant upheaval at Anfield, and not just because Jurgen Klopp has given over the reigns to Arne Slot.
The entire decision-making hierarchy at Liverpool has shifted, and both Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes will have a significant impact on how things move ahead.
Barry Hunter, Liverpool’s chief scout for nearly a decade, will continue to work with Dave Fallows to bring players to Anfield, but everything else is new.
Although many thought Klopp would stay during the overhaul, it was greatly needed, and the team would hopefully gain from it.
That being said, change does not necessarily ensure success, as Jordan Henderson has discovered since leaving Liverpool.
This week, it drew attention to the fact that Henderson, Klopp’s captain for so many years, did not add a message in his parting video.
Jamie Carragher detailed the scenario on the ‘Stick to Football’ podcast, also describing how Jordan Henderson has now been ‘forgotten’.
Jamie Carragher believes Jordan Henderson made a poor football decision by leaving Liverpool.
Carragher claimed on the podcast that he warned Henderson about his decision to move to Saudi Arabia.
And the pundit went on to clarify that the move was also incredibly ill-advised from a football standpoint, let alone in terms of off-the-field issues.
He explained: “I just wanted to say something about Jordan. I chatted with him when he moved to Saudi Arabia.
“I told him my concept and what I thought about it. Sometimes your decisions determine whether you live or die. It’s similar to when Michael Owen moved to Real Madrid, and you expect wonderful things to happen.
“Whereas I’m looking at Anfield on Sunday, not only is Klopp departing, but Thiago and Matip are also having a massive send-off.
“He is the man who has raised all of Liverpool’s trophies, and he is nearly forgotten.
“He made a horrible decision to move there, and I’m not talking about off-the-field issues, I’m talking for football reasons; he should have stayed at Liverpool. He deserved a send-off.”
Of course, Liverpool did an excellent job replacing their captain, adding players such as Alexis MacAllister, who had a fantastic season.
And, while Carragher may lament Henderson’s decision, the timing may have actually suited his former team.
Henderson, 33, may still have some great moments with Ajax in the future, but it may not be enough to make up for the £20 million midfielder’s misgivings.
That being said, Gary Neville recently selected four Premier League managers that he believes are superior to Jurgen Klopp.
